Why baby teeth are important

Baby teeth, or primary teeth, help with articulation, chewing and they hold space for the permanent teeth to grow in. If a baby tooth is lost, adjacent teeth can shift into the empty space and prevent the permanent tooth from erupting. This may lead to teeth that are not straight. Additionally, a decayed tooth can become infected and cause discomfort for a child. Left untreated, dental cavities can result in a broad range of functional impairments that have far-reaching implications for growth, development, school performance, and peer relationships.
